# The Cost of Getting Employee Feedback Wrong

Published 2018-11-07

Performance field note

7 November 2018 · Performance

Year-end goals, customer demands and time-off requests can crowd out the feedback employees need. When a conversation finally happens, delayed observations are harder to recall and broad judgments are harder to act on.

## Feedback needs usable evidence

Useful feedback identifies the work that was observed, the competency involved and the next behavior to practice. A vague rating may satisfy a process, but it does not tell an employee what to repeat or change.

> Frequent, specific observations give a coaching conversation something concrete to work with.

A consistent record also helps managers separate a single recent event from a longer performance pattern. The result is a fairer discussion and a clearer development priority.
