Leadership field note

Follow the Leader

Teams take cues from what leaders repeatedly do. Preparation, accountability and response to setbacks communicate the real standard more clearly than a presentation about values.

Make the example consistent

A leader can reinforce the expected behavior by naming it, demonstrating it and recognizing it in others. Coaching then becomes part of the same pattern rather than a separate management event.

When the example and the evaluation criteria align, employees have a clearer view of what strong performance looks like.
